Hey friends,

Here is my new single, “One Foot”.

When I was writing the lyrics, I was visualizing the massive student protests that were going on this spring and summer in Montreal. And now there seems to be a similar sentiment growing in Alberta, thanks to our provincial government’s massive cuts on Education funding. But that’s another discussion.

I’m just trying to speak to you in a new way. Sometimes all these forms of social media mucks things up.

So instead of spitting my thoughts out into the abyss of twitter or something, every once in a while I’ll make a little Thought Song for you. It’ll be a new series called Thinking Out Loud, hopefully.

I’ve watched this 4 or 5 times in the past few months. It’s on youtube, it’s all over. It’s a super great live concert of the Talking Heads, but before Stop Making Sense. It’s raw but funky, and I love it. Dig in!

Stop Making Sense may have the Big Suit, but if you’re looking for the pinnacle of live Talking Heads footage, I’d point you in the direction of this unbelievable show from Rome, 1980. Completing the Heads’ journey from minimalist to maximalist, it features the expanded, ten-piece lineup blazing through tunes from the just-released masterwork Remain In Light, as well as dynamically re-inventing choice selections from the back catalogue. They still sound like the band of the future more than 30 years later, with careening polyrhythms, interstellar Adrian Belew guitar-work, and P-Funk grooves courtesy of Bernie Worrell. Once in a lifetime, indeed.

Yesterday 2.5 million rivers were protected in Canada.

Today, the Conservatives cut that number to 62.

Apparently to cut ‘red tape’. I hate this. These lakes and rivers existed before we did, as Canadians and as a people, and yet we’re going to let them become exploited to open them up for economical purposes. This really frustrates me: the balance between something real and something invented by man (red tape/economy) is completely out of sync with each other.

I tried my hand at a few new songs last friday, while playing at Bohemia. I messed up a little bit, but overall I felt really good, in a different way than I felt about songs in the past. A friend commented that some of the new songs carry a wind of disappointment with them. I think he might be on to something, but I promise that I won’t fully abandon joy and wonderment. Tonight I’ll be opening for Christian Hansen’s CD release at Dinwoodie. I’m really really excited for this show. I’ll have Doug Organ join the crew on sampler and bongos (Mitchmatic is busy and can’t play). Maureen will be tooting her horn, Matthew rocking out on bass, Corey on keys… and it seems that this might be my last show with Jenni on drums for a while :(

Then Doug Organ and I make our way to New York next week to play at CMJ! I honestly can’t believe that I’ll be playing in New York. The show is at “Fat Baby” on October 20th (Saturday), and I play at 8pm. Also on the bill is Rah Rah, Foam Lake and Gold.

Last night I tweeted that I was bummed that I couldn’t afford to see Chairlift here in Edmonton, since they were opening for Gotye and then BAM! Chairlift tweeted at me and put me on the guest list! How nice of them! I was so giddy; I felt like a total fan boy.

Gotye’s set was surprisingly engaging. He put on a very good show, although at times I felt that I was watching a modern day Phil Collins.

What a nice guy! There must be something about the name...

- This afternoon I was able to see “Magnemonton”, a fringe play my friend Ben made. Funny and endearing.
- Ran into co-workers, and joined them in seeing the Bea Arthurs, who are a fun ukulele band.
- I was productive too; working on the theme song for a TV show (more details later!)
- Also, read a bit.
- Jom Comyn sent me his new demos and his new album is going to sound great.

There’s an art show called Capricious! that I think downtown Edmonton really needs, and you might want to help exist.

Lessons learned:

Holding the phone sideways and thinking about any of this in advance will make for a better viewing experience

Good presenters generally don’t have tomato sauce on their face and might even comb their hair before appearing in a video

Holding my hand over the microphone tends to make the microphone muffled (what a genius I am)

I have a slight problem.

I have a project coming up that I’m very excited to be a part of, and my end of the deal is to write a very clear, fun, annoyingly catchy pop song.

And I just keep getting distracted by making pretty pads on synthesizers. Soundtracking dreams of purple oceans and green skylines. Making the view out of my window transform into an alien landscape.

In other news, I’m working on an EP and demoing songs for a new full length.

Hey, I’m sorry I haven’t written a tour update, but I was offering a minor play-by-play via my twitter.

At the moment we’re driving home through the USA, and we’re taking a slightly longer route. Tomorrow, I’m taking the band to a secret location just off of the I-90. I’m excited for them to have a close encounter with this place.

I’m really looking forward to getting home to work on new material, new art outside of music directly, and to see Maureen.

Over the years, I’ve grown to become a Leonard Cohen fan. Honestly, it took a while. For years I liked “Songs from a Room”, and his first album, “Songs of Leonard Cohen” was next. This past summer, his 80’s work really resonated with me, the albums “Various Positions” and “I’m Your Man”.

When Halifax based blog Herohill asked me to contribute a Cohen cover for a compilation, I jumped on the oportunity. So, I covered “The Law”.
